ETUSC 2017 CAMP STAFF

Laura Bowman - Camp Director Laura is a radical unschooling mom of 3 amazing kids, an artist, and music lover. She is the Director of ETUSC as well as the Coordinator of ARGH (Autodidactic Radical Gathering of Homeschoolers), a bi-annual casual gathering for unschooling families. You can find her during the warm months on her porch making art, going for morning walks with the family dog while listening to music or audiobooks, and trying to get to the lake or river whenever possible; during the cold months she’ll be wrapped in a blanket watching Netflix, trying not to leave the house, and making art in her studio. She enjoys talking about vegan nutrition, family, art, and music...as well as the conundrum of being a social introvert with anxiety who organizes big social events.

Scotty Bowman - Camp Chef Scotty has a passion for the outdoors, hiking and the leave no trace wilderness ethic. He is currently a Wilderness Ranger for the Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards and spends most hours of the day patrolling his sections, talking to hikers and educating them about the area and general safety, as well as picking up trash and keeping the trails well maintained. He has been cooking and working as a chef for over 25 years, so naturally you'll find him coordinating everything in the camp kitchen. Laura and Scotty have 3 pretty amazing kids...Samuel, Silas, and Sadie...who have been unschooled for most of their lives.

Alec Traaseth - Mentor I have been unschooled for the last decade of my life, and this will be my eighth ETUSC, and my sixth time as a mentor. My interests include drumming, gaming, Japanese media, math, heavy music, debating, and eating good food. After ETUSC I will be starting my third year of college, working towards a degree in pure math at the University of Virginia. I hope to be a college math professor one day, and I have worked as a math tutor for several semesters now. Some random facts about me: I love hugs. I can write 2,200 different Kanji. I don't know how to read most of them. (yet) I was a raid leader for several years for my guild in World of Warcraft. Dream Theater is my favorite band. I love lefse way too much. I think Euler's identity is one of the most amazing things in the world. ETUSC is consistently one of the best things I do each year, and I cannot wait for August. Hope to see you there!

Andrew Clack - Mentor Finally etusc is here! This is my third year on staff, 1st time as a mentor. This is always the highlight of my year. I've been unshooled since I was 14, before that I was homeschooled. If you see me walking around come talk to me. My main interests are NBA, music, piano, movies, all kinds of  sports. But I'll talk about anything!

I work on movies, usually as the production designer, sound department, and one time as the lens flarer??? Writing is my favorite thing though. I'm working towards creating a TV show and working as the Showrunner. Random facts: Dan Harmon is kind of my hero. Harmontown and WTF with Marc Maron are my favorite podcasts. I play the Guitar. Claudia Suhrbur - Mentor Sometimes I wish that I could drop out of school and be a fairy instead.  Rather than drop out, I channel that energy into making magical artwork.  I'm a double major of glass and ceramics at Southern Illinois University by day and a cocktail waitress by night.  I love reading, talking, DS games, my puppies, and so many types of art.   There's also an iguana that lives in my house but he's kinda a butthead.  I'm a lifelong unschooler and this will be my second year as a mentor at ETUSC.  Feel free to talk to me about art, life, passions, college options, nerdy things, or anything else!

Léah Miller - Mentor; Camp Listener & Supporter I use they/them pronouns (if that's confusing to you, come talk to me about it! I care a lot about creating space for queer feels, so I am always open to chat if you want/need to!)  This is my fourth year as a mentor and second year as camp listener and supporter. Camp is my favorite week of the year. I was unschooled from 10th grade on, but now I'm a student at NYU Gallatin, studying people and words. Please come talk to me about literally anything and everything!  Some things I get excited about:  •Social dancing, especially blues and contra •Theatre, movies, books, music •All things gender / sex / sexuality / attraction / love / friendship / what even is being a human •Tattoos/piercings as artistic expression •Words and language (especially French, German, and ASL) •Education and what that even means •Travel •Knitting, embroidery, sending letters… Please come chat! You can probably doodle in my tattoos if you ask first.

Max VerNooy - Mentor Max is a 22 year old unschooler for life. He’s always been interested in karate, juggling, magic, and most of all playing games! He was always afraid of having to give those up to go to college, “grow up,” and get a job. After a short adventure in the world of customer service, Max got hired at the karate studio he’s been training at since he was a kid. Now Max is working at his dream job as a karate instructor, and he still has time for all his hobbies… most recently, joggling! (Running and juggling at the same time.) He has since changed his idea of “growing up,” and has given up on going to college for now.

Samuel Bowman - Mentor I don't like that feeling on the roof of your mouth, the kind you get from an old doughnut from a grocery store. I'm a big fan of rock guitars, they pretty cool. If I could only eat one condiment (Mustard, ketchup, etc.) forever I'd choose mayonnaise, cause it's good by the spoonful. Not big on sports, or bands named after sports. And I think root veggies are pretty cool.

Will Suhrbur - Mentor; Camp Listener & Supporter Hey there!  This will be my fifth year at ETUSC as a camp mentor, and third year as camp Listener and Supporter.  I have been a lifelong homeschooler/unschooler and deem it the best opportunity-bringing, happiness-inducing factor of my life so far. Here are some things about me you will likely experience if you join me at ETUSC for the week: - I love the color Green. - I always capitalize the word "Green." - I love athletics of all kinds, though primarily football, soccer and pole vaulting. - You will make me laugh if you interact with me. - I love to dance. Primarily blues dancing, but I’m always down for anything.  A little swing? Attempting to breakdance? The nye-nye? A little spontaneous freestyle? It all sounds good to me.  Ask me to dance and I will gladly dance with you. - I write music for all sorts of things including weddings, soundtracks to film, orchestral pieces, and others just because. - Video games.  Who doesn’t love ‘em? - Piano. - My undergraduate major in college was psychology, and I am working on my master's degree in computer science, so talking about emotions, dreams, state of mind, individual ideologies, life-ambitions or anything related to computers are very intriguing subjects to me. While these are the things I have highlighted in my bio, don't be fooled; I love conversing about anything so long as my reciprocator holds interest in the conversation.  I hope your experience with ETUSC is as experienced-filled as mine has been.  Whether its good, overwhelming, confusing, bad, totally awesome, different than you were expecting or something completely unique, come tell me all about it.  I'd love to hear.

Jess Cox - Kitchen Intern I've been homeschooled, unschooled and attended public school. I'm currently attending a private college, but unschooling is the best! Before going to college, I spent a lot of time figuring myself out, volunteering for environmental non-profits and just living. I'm about to start my 4th year of college (and debt free so far!). I study psychology and social justice there. Earlier this summer I worked with a professor at my school to do research on why low-income people get involved in activism. It's really important to me to take the academic stuff I'm learning and apply it to solving real life problems. I love making crafts and art like sewing clothes, knitting, crocheting, and I'm starting to get into painting but I'm not very good at it. Travelling, hiking, swimming (especially in lakes and oceans) are some of my favorite things to do. Since I've been in school, I haven't been reading very much outside of my assignments, but I am trying to get back in the habit. I've also been involved in various types of activism since I was 18. I'm pretty into talking about Myers-Briggs and Enneagram personality typing systems, creating a better world, and also like the nature of the universe and stuff... as well as just getting to know people better. I am looking forward to meeting new campers and seeing new friends. Working in the kitchen means I'm not always around, but please feel free to talk to me about anything you want.

Nesta Childres - Late Night Mentor I'm a Tree Warrior with a passion for love. My goal is to commune forever within the earth mother. Lots of animals have told me it is our destiny to join together this etusc and bear witness to the most wholesome of powers: unschooling. Talk to me about board game mechanics, rituals and cool secrets. Don't talk to me about ghosts or how much corn you ate last night. I really don't care to know. With love, Nesta

Coburn Butler - Junior Mentor Heyo, I'm Coburn. I'm a Sophomore in college and I'm here to jazz it up! All I know is how to be a computer boy. If you're a computer people too then come throw some knowledge at me. Let me let you know some mad facts about me. The only way you'll see me is if you have special eyes, I only walk on the darkest of dirt until the new day dawns, and composting is the only way for worms to get their money back. So if you see me out in the wastes looking for liquids come speak your mind, and maybe the world will finally work.

If you were to ask my mom to describe me, she would say "he's smart, funny and handsome!" If you were to ask my friends, they would say "he's tall." If you were to ask my dog, she would say "I like the way he smells."

Shaun Biegler - Kitchen Volunteer I have been unschooled for the majority of my life and I have attended every single ETUSC since its inception. I am a feminist. I have spent a fair amount of time travelling and have visited twenty countries and two continents not counting North America. A basic sample of subjects I enjoy talking about include history, mythologies, game design and writing. I am shy and introverted when meeting people however that doesn't mean I don't like to talk. I may look large and scary but I'm quite harmless Thank you for taking the time to read my bio and I hope you have an excellent week!
