ETUSC 2018 CAMP STAFF

Laura Bowman - Camp Director Laura is a radical unschooling mom of 3 amazing kids, an artist, and music lover. She is the Director of ETUSC as well as the Coordinator of ARGH (Autodidactic Radical Gathering of Homeschoolers), a bi-annual casual gathering for unschooling families. You can find her during the warm months on her porch making art, going for morning walks with the family dog while listening to music or audiobooks, and trying to get to the lake or river whenever possible; during the cold months she’ll be wrapped in a blanket watching Netflix, trying not to leave the house, and making art in her studio. She enjoys talking about vegan nutrition, family, art, and music...as well as the conundrum of being a social introvert with anxiety who organizes big social events.

Scotty Bowman - Camp Chef Scotty has a passion for the outdoors, hiking and the leave no trace wilderness ethic. He is currently a Wilderness Ranger for the Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards and spends most hours of the day patrolling his sections, talking to hikers and educating them about the area and general safety, as well as picking up trash and keeping the trails well maintained. He has been cooking and working as a chef for over 25 years, so naturally you'll find him coordinating everything in the camp kitchen. Laura and Scotty have 3 pretty amazing kids...Samuel, Silas, and Sadie...who have been unschooled for most of their lives.

Aggie Ulibarri - Mentor Hello! I have been to three previous ETUSCs as a camper from 2011-2013 and have taken a short hiatus in the unschool community to complete a degree in physics and mathematics at Linfield College in the PNW. If you are at all interested in those subjects please talk to me! I love discussing anything science/math :) Travelling is something really close to my heart, I have worked and lived in Paris and studied in China. Come talk to me about your travelling dreams/experiences. I am excited to return as a mentor this year. I love meeting new people and discussing the passions that drive us all so uniquely.

I am excited to return as a mentor this year. I love meeting new people and discussing the passions that drive us all so uniquely.

Alec Traaseth - Mentor I started Unschooling at age 9, and never looked back. This will be my ninth ETUSC, and my seventh time as a mentor. My interests include drumming, gaming, Japanese media, math, heavy music, Star Wars, and any kind of board game/tabletop game with friends. After ETUSC I will be starting the final year of my undergraduate career, working towards a degree in pure math at the University of Virginia. I hope to be a college math professor one day, and I have been working as a math tutor for over two years during my studies. Some random facts about me: I love hugs. I was a raid leader for several years for my guild in World of Warcraft. I can curse in Tagalog/Filipino. Dream Theater is my favorite band. I love lefse way too much. I have read many, many Star Wars novels. I think Euler's identity is one of the most beautiful things in the world. e^(i*pi) + 1 = 0. ETUSC is consistently one of the best things I do each year, and I cannot wait for August. Hope to see you there!

Léah Miller - Mentor; Camp Listener & Supporter I use they/them pronouns (if that's confusing to you, come talk to me about it! Max VerNooy - Mentor Max is a 23 year old unschooler for life. Never been to a day of school, he’s now living the dream working as a full time karate instructor. Max has a passion for working with kids in any context, though. He lives in Delaware with his parents and siblings (all of whom Max still gets along with after 23 years).

Will Suhrbur - Mentor; Camp Listener & Supporter Hey there!  This will be my sixth year at ETUSC as a camp mentor, and fourth year as camp Listener and Supporter.  I have been a lifelong homeschooler/unschooler and deem it the best opportunity-bringing, happiness-inducing factor of my life so far. Here are some things about me you will likely experience if you join me at ETUSC for the week: - I love the color Green. - I always capitalize the word "Green." - I love athletics of all kinds, though primarily football, soccer and pole vaulting. - You will make me laugh if you interact with me. - I love to dance. Primarily blues dancing, but I’m always down for anything.  A little swing? Attempting to breakdance? The nye-nye? A little spontaneous freestyle? It all sounds good to me.  Ask me to dance and I will gladly dance with you. - I write music for all sorts of things including weddings, soundtracks to film, orchestral pieces, and others just because. - Video games.  Who doesn’t love ‘em? - Piano. - My undergraduate major in college was psychology, and I am working on my master's degree in computer science, so talking about emotions, dreams, state of mind, individual ideologies, life-ambitions or anything related to computers are very intriguing subjects to me. While these are the things I have highlighted in my bio, don't be fooled; I love conversing about anything so long as my reciprocator holds interest in the conversation.  I hope your experience with ETUSC is as experienced-filled as mine has been.  Whether its good, overwhelming, confusing, bad, totally awesome, different than you were expecting or something completely unique, come tell me all about it.  I'd love to hear.

Coburn Butler - Late Night Junior Mentor Hey, I'm Coburn I like to think of myself as a really tasty sandwich. One where you get some really soft sourdough bread cut off a couple of slices and fry em up with some goat butter, and between those toasted slices you take a good 1/4 of a pound of roast beef and throw it on there in nice thin slices. Maybe after that you take a couple fresh leaves of red cabbage and lay those right on top, but in between the cabbage and the beef you put some spicy yellow dijon mustard. On top of that cabbage there's a couple slices of red heirloom tomato and slightly sauteed yellow onion. Right before that sandwich is done you salt and pepper that bad boy and you got yourself a sandwich.

Connor Cote - Junior Mentor I am nothing but a floating torso and head as my picture suggests. Every day is a struggle, but I'll do my best as a junior mentor. Just don't ask me to do things that require hands and feet, such as writing poetry or jiu jitsu. It makes me feel really self-conscious.

Trinity Dixon - Junior Mentor Hi! I’m Trinity. I was a camper for 4 years but I've been around since 2011, with the absence of last year, and this will be my first time as staff! I’m super excited and hope to get to know as many of you as I can this week. Here are a few things about me! I’m a musician. I play guitar and ukulele, and I love to sing, so you’ll definitely hear me play over the week. I love to make art. My favorites are painting and sketching, but I always enjoy learning new things. As far as I’m concerned, music and books are pretty much the two greatest things ever. I’m super involved in my local theater, having done 4 shows so far (one of which is why I wasn’t able to be here last year), and have helped out backstage for more. I spent 3 years as a part time nanny, and I've been working at a historic Inn for about 2 years, which, as of this year, also includes waitressing. I’m Bi and Ace spectrum and I always love talking LGBTQ+ everything. I also really like talking to people about things that they’re passionate about. I’m a big fan of platonic intimacy, deep conversations, and really just connecting with people. I have pretty bad anxiety but I've gotten much better at dealing with it over the past few years. If you ever need anything, or just someone to talk to, I’d be happy to help as much as I can.

Jess Cox - Kitchen Intern For fun, I like to travel, swim, knit, paint, create clothes/sew, watch cartoons and cook. I've been getting more into spirituality and finding the path that seems right to me (Surprise, organized religion wasn't it for me). I'm really interested in contemplating social justice, psychology and activism and I love meeting people and trying new things. I grew up in the mountains and try to go camping and hiking often. I recently graduated from college with a degree in Psychology. I just took my first graduate school class on Marriage and Family Therapy and in the fall I start a full time program working towards a Masters degree in Social Work. I'd love to talk to anyone who's interested about any of those things, or going to school as an unschooler, etc. I've been cooking at ETUSC since 2013 and I always enjoy it!! I'm looking forward to meeting new campers!

Shaun Biegler - Kitchen Volunteer Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my directory bio! For your efforts, here are some things to know about me. I have been unschooled since the age of 6, I have attended ETUSC for every year it has existed, and and I am a feminist. I have traveled to over twenty different counties ( primarily in Europe ) and I have a fondness of history and other nerdy things. I hope that whenever or wherever you read this that you are having a lovely day ^_^
