Staff

Camp Staff for 2011:

Laura Bowman
Camp Director, 40
Laura is a full-time, radical unschooling mom, artist and dreamer who loves spending time with kids of all ages, especially teens since she is still a teenager at heart.  She started a world-wide social forum for radical unschoolers called the Radical Unschoolers Network.   She is the Coordinator of the bi-annual event known as ARGH (Autodidactic Radical Gathering of Homeschoolers) which takes place in the beautiful mountains of East Tennessee.  ETUSC is a long-time dream come true!

Scotty Bowman
Kitchen Director, 42
Scotty has spent the last 16 years working to support his family, 6 of those years as a chef so naturally he will be running the kitchen at camp.  At the end of 2009, he walked away from the restaurant business to go back to school and pursue his passion for outdoor adventures.  He is currently a student in the Parks & Recreation department and will use his time there to gain knowledge and certifications he will need to help build our new business, Bowman Adventures, of which ETUSC is a big part.

Laura and Scotty have been unschooling for 15 years, radically unschooling for the last 6 or so.
Together, they have raised 3 pretty amazing kids...Samuel, Silas, and Sadie.

Sadie Bowman
Director's Assistant, 11
This awesome girl I know...you’ll find Sadie around camp helping her mom and hanging out with friends.  She loves clothes and makeup, video chatting online, texting, playing board games, watching youtube videos, and spending time with her family and friends.

Andrew Doran
Mentor, 22
Andrew is a lifelong unschooler from Massachusetts. He enjoys motorcycles, cars, swimming, baseball, frisbee, guitar, drums, woodworking, metalworking, improvisational acting, algebra, physics, insightful conversations, and family movie nights among a plethora of other activities!
He is currently working towards a bachelor of liberal arts degree at Harvard Extension, and hopes to pursue a career in astrophysics.

Andrew Heintz
Mentor, 22
I run. I jump. I break things. I dance in the rain. I run in the forest. I find the world to be a giant playground. I eat apples. I shove. I move. I love.

Dagny Kream
Mentor, 18
Dagny Kream is a life long autodidact from a small, beautiful farm town in Massachusetts. She enjoys photography, swimming, camping, sewing, hula hooping, eating, long walks, cooking, growing food and pretty flowers, hunting for vintage treasures, being with creative and interesting people and too many other things to name! She devotes much of her time to running her two Etsy shops, designing and creating her own clothing, and romping about with her cat, Millie.
She would love to talk to you about selling your work online, photography, any of the other subjects listed above, life, the universe and everything.

Jessica Harmon
Mentor, 18
Jessica is an almost lifelong unschooler, who lives in a small valley town in Arkansas with her parents, brother, four neurotic dogs and two rambunctious cats. Her goals in life are constantly changing - the latest being living and traveling in a transit bus. Some of her many interests include: finding new thrift stores, vintage things, fancy shoes, listening to music, traveling, hula hooping, thinking too much, photography, tattoos and piercings, hair dying, baking, creating, and cute small things i.e; babies and kittens.

Laurel Thompson
Mentor, 21
Laurel is a nearly-lifelong unschooler from rainy, rainy Oregon. She is super excited to be a mentor at camp this year, and to be visiting Tennessee for the first time. The biggest aspects of her life are by far all of the wonderful people in it, closely followed by her passion for art, dancing (social, performance, and those rare moments when she's home alone), baking, LGBTQ rights, and helping plants grow. She would love to talk to you about food, dreams, art, being an introvert, organic gardening, travelling, gender and sexuality, edible and medicinal plants, YOUR passions and ideas, and anything else you can come up with.

Trevor Allen
Night Owl, 21
Hi, my name is Trevor! I stay up late, love talking to new people and have far too much fun making faces and generally acting much younger than I am.
My interests include:
Technology (big geek)
outdoor activities such as swimming, biking, etc.
making people laugh and giving/receiving hugs.
I'm also really tall, and bad at writing short blurbs about myself. I look forward to meeting everyone this year!

Rebekka Zander
Kitchen Staff, 19
Bekka is a 19 year old unschooler who currently lives in Corvallis, Oregon. She spends most of her time playing with children or dancing. Or both at the same time. Currently her favorite styles include Irish Dance, Blues, Argentine Tango, and Lindy/Swing. If you know a style of dance that you would like to show her, she would be very excited to learn. Or if you want to learn a style she does, she would love to teach you.
Bekka also enjoys cooking, frisbee, people, sarcasm, running, taking bad pictures and sometimes good ones, piano, being crazy, and many other things.
